Tuesday 30th August
After
another late start we set off for Corfu. The instructions in the daily
programme had been quite explicit – that the terminal building (where we would
get the shuttle bus) would be 2 ship lengths' walk away. The question is, that length walk was from where? We walked half the length of our ship, plus a distance between
ships, then past another long ship and could see buses in the distance. I
thought they were our shuttle buses but they turned out to be excursion buses
for another ship. From that point it was another half a kilometre (2 ship
lengths) to the terminal building. We had the choice of walking it or going
back one ship length and catching a shuttle bus within the port. We walked on
in the heat. My feet were dragging by the time we reached the terminal and the
shuttle buses.
There
was quite a traffic jam getting into the old town but at last we arrived. It
was just as I remembered. We wandered through the narrow alleys and looked in
all the shops. One lovely thing about Corfu is that every shop seems to stock
different items. I have bought jewellery in Corfu before. I like their
selection.
We
sat down in one of the old shady buildings for a drink and to use the wifi.
Unfortunately it kept dropping out and we could not get anywhere. We finally went
inside where it was a bit too warm but the wifi was much faster.
We
went back to the ship shortly before 4pm. The bus ride back was faster and more
scenic, being beside the shore. This time we caught the port shuttle bus, which
took us from the terminal building to the end of our ship. It was much better
to only have to walk half the length of our ship. (The next day I had a little
talk with Guest Relations and suggested – making clear that it was a suggestion
and not a complaint – that they make the instructions for this port clear in
future, and pointed out the consequences to my health of the wrong
instructions. At first they were sure they had it right, but then checked and
realised that the correct information had arrived in an email but the
information in our daily programme was incorrect.)
We
spent our usual time in Café al Bacio and then an hour by the pool before
returning to our room. My legs felt like concrete as I tried to walk up the
stairs by the pool. I was too exhausted to get dressed for dinner. We decided
to eat in the Oceanview Café (the buffet). It was not brilliant but it was
easy. Afterwards I went back to our room to rest and sat on the balcony and read while
David went to the show and then sat in the martini bar. He came back about 11pm
and we had an early night.
During
the night David started talking in his sleep. I found that I could ask him
questions, like what day it was, and he could give quite lucid answers and yet
not remember a thing in the morning. I had quite a laugh as I ‘chatted’ to him.
